Is your life affected by acid reflux? Is heartburn something you occasionally suffer from? Were you aware that these are two words for the same condition? When you have a severe type of heartburn, it’s called acid reflux.
While acid reflux can be painful, the positive side to it is that it is mostly a preventable and manageable condition.
You may have to give up some regular habits, and visit your doctor once in a while, but there’s no reason why this condition has to be a major part of your daily life. Once you realize why you are experiencing this disorder, it will be easier to treat it. We will therefore be looking at some of the most common acid reflux causes so that you can eliminate them from your life.
Is snacking late at night something you frequently do? Someone has surely told you to avoid this. You’ve probably been told by parents, doctors and magazine articles not to eat your snacks too late at night. Most people have gotten this advice since they were children. Well, everyone who told you this was right! Acid reflux attacks can in fact be caused by, or made worse by, eating too close to bedtime.
The reason for this is that your stomach acid tends to shift to areas outside your stomach when you lie down to go to sleep. Make sure you allow your food to settle in your stomach before going to sleep. This is how your body is designed.
Certain commonly consumed medicines can cause acid reflux symptoms. If you regularly take muscle relaxers, this may be what’s causing your acid reflux or heartburn. If you take any type of blood pressure medications, these can also cause acid reflux attacks. Blood thinners that can be bought over the counter, like ibuprofen and Advil can also contribute to acid reflux symptoms.
If you have a sensitive stomach you should try to stay away from these medications. If, however, you need them for other conditions, ask your doctor what you can do to counteract the side effects they are causing with your digestive system.
Acid reflux can be triggered by a particular type of exercise. In most cases, the kind of exercise that produces the symptoms are those that work the abdominal wall. If too much pressure is exerted on the stomach, stomach acid can be pushed into the esophagus. You should not stop working out because of this!
But when it comes to exercising your abdominal muscles, don’t do high impact exercises if they produce these symptoms. Another thing to keep in mind is that you shouldn’t eat right before a workout. If exercising is causing you difficulties, you should also ask a personal trainer or your doctor for suggestions on altering your exercise regime.
You don’t have to let acid reflux play a major role in your life. Acid reflux can often be prevented once you know what’s causing it to occur. You may need to alter some of your everyday choices to avoid acid reflux, but this isn’t so hard. If your diet is causing the symptoms, you can learn which foods you have to stay away from. Acid reflux is mostly a condition that is the result of daily practices, though occasionally there is a medical cause.
