Focusing on Lasik Eye Surgery

by admin on 28/01/2011

Lasik eye surgery has been changing people’s lives, and if you’ve become sick of poking your eye everyday to get a contact lens in, or tired of cleaning glasses that are smudged before you have a chance to put them back on, then lasers may be the answer for you.

In this article we’ll briefly explain what Lasik is, how to find out if it’s suitable for you, and what the benefits will be if you have the procedure carried out.

So what actually is Lasik eye surgery?

Just incase you don’t already know, and there are probably very few people that do, ‘Lasik’ actually stands for: Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis. The actual process uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea so that it’s as near to perfect as it can be.

How do you know if this is suitable for you?

While your eyesight is still changing Lasik eye surgery is going to be out of the question. If you’ve had to change either your contact lens or glasses prescription in the last 12 months, then you probably won’t be able to have this procedure done.

Other people who won’t qualify are: anyone younger than in their early 20′s, pregnant women, people on certain kinds of medication, as well as people with diabetes. Of course this list may vary from one doctor to the next, or change as the technology develops, but in most of these cases the guidelines are there for health and safety reasons, as well as the fact that it may be pointless to have your sight changed if it’s still in the process of changing on its own.

What are some of the benefits of having Lasik eye surgery?

If you have one of the more common eye problems such as: long or short-sightedness, then you should be able to have it corrected. As the technology improves there’s a good chance that many of the other eyesight problems will be able to be corrected using this method; it’s already improved dramatically since the first excimer laser was approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in 1995.

For most people there are very few side-effects after having the Lasik eye surgery. They may be sensitive to light, but this will generally only last for a couple of days; for most people they will have a few hours where everything settles and their eyesight clears, after that it’s like they never had a problem in the first place. Most people are able to go back to work anywhere from one to three days after having the surgery.

Before you have anything done there are certain things you need to do. To start with you’ll need to make sure that the physician performing the operation has done it before, they will be making an incision so you’ll want to go through the same checks as you would for any surgery.

You should learn exactly what the procedure involves, and what the risks are. If you still choose to go through with it then it won’t be long before you can stop worrying about cleaning glasses, other than the sun variety, and you won’t have to stick your finger in your eye again, all because you did your homework and got the best Lasik eye surgery.

The first LASIK surgery must have been a tough sell: “We’re gonna point a laser at your eye, cut your shit up, then you’ll be able to see.”
