PCOS Fertility and Infertility

by Mr Fitness on 30/08/2010

Fertility is the ability to give life. Therefore when someone has fertility problems it usually means that they cannot get pregnant or are having problems doing so. Women who get pregnant but have repeated miscarriages are also sometimes thought of as infertile.

People with PCOS tend to be infertile because they don’t ovulate. Not ovulating means that no mature egg was released through the fallopian tube to the uterus.

Fertilization is the union of sperm and the egg cell to produce an embryo which can be defined as the “start of life”. Without a mature egg fertilization won’t occur.

The cause is still unknown though many doctors believe that the cause of PCOS is hormonal imbalance. This is probably insulin and above normal male sex hormones. It is also thought to be genetic which means it may be passed down from parent to offspring.

Women who have PCOS tend to have above average testosterone levels. Normally a woman will have a low amount of testosterone and a high amount of estrogen. But the increase in testosterone interferes with the egg cell production of the woman.

The eggs that should develop become cysts and are not released during ovulation. This prevents conception due to fertilization being unable to occur because there is no egg cell to be fertilized. Fertilization not occurring means no products of conception.

PCOS fertility problems affect the majority of women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. PCOS is the most common reason for infertility among the child-bearing women population. It also affects 5% of the entire female population which disredards ethnicity and nationality.
