Is Reiki one of those practices that you know you’ve heard of, but aren’t too sure if you know what it actually is? With so many different healing practices available these day it’s easy to find yourself getting confused about what’s on offer, never mind actually knowing what it is or where it came from, so now’s your chance to take a few minutes and find out what it’s all about.
In this article we’re going to have a look at the origins of Reiki, how it’s practiced, and finally, look at the sort of benefits you would be hoping to see from it.
So what is the origin of this practice?
It was developed in Japan in the 20th century by Mikao Usui after, having fasted and meditated on the summit of Mt. Kurama for three weeks, Mikao Usui was given the ability to heal.
The actual name, Reiki, is taken from the two Japanese characters for energy. “Rei” can mean either “spiritual” or “unseen” and “ki” can stand for either “life force” or “energy”. If you follow this line of thinking through then Reiki translates into “unseen energy”, “unseen life force” or “spiritual energy” and “spiritual life force”. However, it’s normally associated with “universal life energy”.
How do practitioners use this ability?
The way it’s performed is very similar to the ancient art of the “laying on of hands”. The energy, the “life force energy” that is, is channelled through the palms of the practitioner and flows through the person they’re treating. The idea is that if your energy is low then you feel weak and more prone to illness, so a practitioner is making sure that your energy levels are at their peak.
While it may be an extremely powerful healing technique, it’s also a remarkably easy practice to learn. In fact, it isn’t something that you actually learn, anyway. The skills involved in performing it are “passed” to the student during the class, or “attunement”. It’s also said to be passed on to people who are having the treatment performed on them in a healing capacity.
Even though this is essentially a spiritual practice there is nothing that could really be classed as “religious” attached to it. No specific beliefs are needed to make it work, or to have it work for you.
What are the benefits you should expect to see from having Reiki performed on you?
As mentioned earlier this is a way to get energy flowing back through your body, and topping up any energy dips you may be experiencing, as, all being well, you should expect to feel an increase in energy and a decrease in energy sapping illnesses; it should provide you with spiritual as well as physical healing.
People who have been treated, or even self-treated, are said to feel calmer, more relaxed, and more emotionally balanced than they were previously.
So there we have it; the Practice of Reiki.
Many people swear by it, and it seems to have some sort of positive effect on them, you don’t have to have any beliefs, one way or the other, before trying it out, and you may come away with the ability to start as a practitioner yourself.
While it’s still advisable to consult a doctor if you have physical or emotional problems, you may just decide that it’s also worth trying out a bit of Reiki, too.
